description.: Otti Albietz and BBE present his third album ‘And the
Voices’. This album forms the culminating piece in a
musical trilogy which Otti describes as his initial
statement, helping to identify and establish his
musical persona as well as providing a plane from which
future work will evolve. ‘And the Voices’ embodies and
ties up loose ends and ideas that have been developing
for the last 6 years
These steps began with his first album ‘One’ 2011
followed by ‘Bubbytone II’ 2013), and have now been
brought full circle with this third album. Since
producing music under his own name, Otti has been
writing arrangements to his songs with the aim of
performing them live with a group of musicians. For
And the Voices’, Otti directed the arrangements and
co-wrote the parts with each musician during
rehearsals
This album shows a continuing relationship with friend
and artist Thad Skews. On the album Thad plays bass and
sings backing vocals, and is the hand behind the album
artwork. For the recording of ‘And the Voices’, and for
future live performances, Otti has invited friend and
musician James Gulliver on drums and backing vocals
Completing the studio performance is the inspiring
addition of long-time musical supporter and session
musician Darren Morris, playing synth and co-producing
As well as these, occasional vocal appearances are made
by Otti’s partner Anna Graebe, who has performed on
both ‘One’ and ‘Bubbytone II’. ‘And the Voices’ was
recorded to completion in two days over the 15th album
was engineered and recorded with Harvey Summers, whom
Otti worked with on ‘Bubbytone II’, at Harvey’s
Broadoak Studios in East Sussex. The band performed all
parts live, including all lead vocals
Otti’s instinct and premise for this album was that the
best performances were those that felt right rather
than those which focused on a precise technicality
This attitude is the driving force behind the band
dynamic and the recording process, and has allowed for
spontaneous musical interactions throughout the
creation of the album. Many of the songs you hear on
the album are first takes and all others were captured
within, at most, four takes

‘Master Mix’ embodies the genre-defying, experimental spirit that defined Russell’s work. Living in the East Village from the ‘70s until his untimely death in 1992 at age 40 from AIDS-related causes, Russell moved effortlessly between the city’s various music scenes, recording disco beats alongside Nicky Siano one night, and the next, crafting slow, haunting tracks in his apartment with his cello and idiosyncratic warbling voice. The New Yorker called his work “stranded between lands real and imagined: the street and the cornfield; the soft bohemian New York and the hard Studio 54 New York; the cheery bold strokes of pop and the liberating possibilities of abstract art.” Through his collaborations, he earned the admiration of artists like Allen Ginsberg, David Byrne and Philip Glass, who said of Russell’s music: “It does not submit to formula, but subverts the formula.”

Puss N Boots began performing in N.Y.C. nightclubs in 2008 but didn’t deliver their debut, No Fools, No Fun, until the summer of 2014 — a pretty good indication that this group was intended as something of a lark. All three musicians – Norah Jones, Sasha Dobson and Catherine Popper — keep themselves busy with solo day jobs that range from in-demand supporting musicians to full-time superstars, but Puss N Boots affords the trio an opportunity to indulge in their shared love of country and other pieces of ramshackle Americana.
Jones has another part-time country band, but where she’s the frontwoman for the Little Willies, Puss N Boots is decidedly a collaborative affair, finding Jones, Dobson, and Popper harmonizing and trading leads, often within the course of…
a song. The group follows no straight path and neither does No Fools, No Fun. It’s half covers, half originals, part live and part studio, the different parts sitting side by side, adding up to a curious record whose raggedness feels like a statement of purpose. Puss N Boots celebrates the moments that don’t add up, the places where the present blurs with the past, delivering songs with a sly wink that camouflages a teary eye. No Fools, No Fun is never rowdy — the closest it comes is the train-track beat of Jones’ original “Don’t Know What It Means” — but there’s an earthiness to the trio’s chemistry that signals how deeply the group knows each other’s strengths and weaknesses. This is where Puss N Boots’ long history of woodshedding pays off: far from sounding like a busman’s holiday, there’s a shared past that’s evident in every moment of this debut, and that natural, relaxed camaraderie is the reason why No Fools, No Fun is such an appealing listen.

In 1966, Joni Mitchell was two years away from recording her first album, and she was just another contemporary folksinger looking for her break when she was booked to play the Second Fret, then Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s premiere folk venue.
While Mitchell wasn’t yet a star, she had already written a handful of great songs that would go on to become classics (including “Both Sides Now,” “The Circle Game,” “Song to a Seagull,” and “Urge for Going”) and knew how to deliver them with the skill and confidence of a master performer.
Live at the Second Fret 1966 is a document of one of Mitchell’s Philadelphia performances, and while the audio is less than perfect (it previously circulated as a bootleg), it delivers a fascinating portrait of one of the great singer/songwriters…
of the ’70s on the cusp of stardom. Here Mitchell’s vocals and guitar work are sure and emotionally effective, and her personality retains a bubbliness and youthful sincerity that contrasts with the sometimes dour tone of her songs. For fans curious about Joni Mitchell’s early days as a musician, Live at the Second Fret 1966 reveals the talent was clearly there long before she was embraced by the mass audience.

Forty-four years is a long time between albums, but for singer/songwriter
Linda Perhacs it has been exactly that. The Soul of All Natural Things is
her sophomore recording. Her first, the 1970 psych-folk masterpiece
Parallelograms, has a storied history (see her bio if you need it
recounted). In its own way, this set picks up where her hallucinatory
classic left off. Her collaborators are a younger generation of L.A.
musicians. Perhacs wrote all the lyrics, several melodies, and co-produced
with Chris Price and Fernando Perdomo, who also perform. Julia Holter and
Nite Jewel’s Ramona Gonzalez assist with vocals, keyboards, and
arrangements. The sound is modern yet keeps Perhacs’ essential musical
nature at the fore. Her voice at 70 is a bit thinner than the throaty
mezzo-soprano she displayed at 27, but serves the material unconditionally.
The title track commences with her careful vocal phrasing, fingerpicked
guitar, subtle strings, and near plainchant backing voices…

A singular talent who passed almost unnoticed during his brief lifetime, Nick Drake produced several albums of chilling, somber beauty. With hindsight, these have come to be recognized as peak achievements of both the British folk-rock scene and the entire rock singer/songwriter genre. Sometimes compared to Van Morrison, Drake in fact resembled Donovan much more in his breathy vocals, strong melodies, and the acoustic-based orchestral sweep of his arrangements. His was a much darker vision than Donovan’s, however, with disturbing themes of melancholy, failed romance, mortality, and depression lurking just beneath, or even well above, the surface. Ironically, Drake has achieved a far greater stature in the decades following his death, with an avid cult following that grows by the year.
